The Ethics Of Discernment. In The Ethics of Discernment, Patrick H. Byrne presents an approach to ethics that builds upon the cognitional theory and the philosophical method of self-appropriation that Bernard Lonergan introduced in his book Insight, as well as upon Lonergan’s later writing on ethics and values. Extending Lonergan’s method into the realm of ethics, Byrne argues that we can use self-appropriation to come to objective judgements of value. The Ethics of Discernment is an introspective analysis of that process, in which sustained ethical inquiry and attentiveness to feelings as “intentions of value” leads to a rich conception of the good. Written both for those with an interest in Lonergan’s philosophy and for those interested in theories of ethics who have only a limited knowledge of Lonergan’s work, Byrne’s book is the first detailed exposition of an ethical theory based on Lonergan’s philosophical method.

Religion And Violence. The aim of Religion and Violence is to engage dialectically key symbols of religiously motivated violence through the insights of Bernard Lonergan. Sociologists and psychologists argue the link between religion and violence. Religion is viewed more as part of the problem and not part of the solution to violence. Bernard Lonergan's insights have helped the author arrive at a number of conclusions regarding the link between religion and violence. He argues that there is a difference between distorted religion and genuine religion, between authenticity and inauthenticity of the subject. Distorted religion has the capacity to shape traditions in ways that justify violence, while genuine religion heals persons, helps them make different moral decisions when confronted with situations of conflict, and aims to explore new ways of understanding themselves as shaping history toward progress. Further, Religion and Violence, while arguing from within the Catholic Christian tradition, nevertheless seeks to provide a number of categories that will speak to people from other cultural traditions. Since many of the examples of religious violence cited by commentators come out of the Islamic tradition, the author has evidenced and explored more authentic aspects of the Islamic tradition that would help provide a solution to violence.

From Revolution To Ethics. Challenging the prevalent view that the 1960s did not have any lasting effect, From Revolution to Ethics demonstrates that intellectuals and activists turned to ethics as the touchstone for understanding interpersonal, institutional, and political dilemmas. In absorbing and scrupulously researched detail Bourg explores the developing ethical fascination as it emerged among student Maoists courting terrorism, anti-psychiatric celebrations of madness, feminists mobilizing against rape, and pundits and philosophers championing human rights.

The Ethics Class. Within the United States and throughout the world, there is an abundance of rhetoric about the importance of education. The idea that education is vitally important seems obvious. However, often missing in the rhetoric is a true appreciation of the depth and complexity of what it actually means to be "educated." How does education happen? The Ethics Class offers no clear cut answers. What it does offer is an open-ended exploration of this depth and complexity through conversation, poetry, and metaphor. It is simply one possible exploration. Topics include, among others: responsibility, character, indoctrination, acting vs. being, emotion, spirituality, relationship, and rationality. At this moment in human history basic questions about humanity and the state of the world seem particularly poignant. Addressing these questions intelligently may be necessary for all of our survival. The Ethics Class ponders what it might mean to "intelligently address."

Ethical Revolution. This book shows who I am and what I have been wondering and pondering about throughout my life. Although it is highly theoretical in its contents, this book is practical in its application. It contains several study questions for each chapter for you to reflect, discuss, and apply your new learning and insights. It is geared for you to start from your mind to arrive at trying out your understanding for practical changes in your daily life. It contains essential ethical factors that I continuously love to struggle with. Among many, some of them are eugenics, responsive relationship between the church and the state, and dialectical relationship between love and justice, mind control, power in the powerless, discipleship, and the future. This is my ongoing search for answers on those topics, in order to upgrade the quality of human civilization, not just American or Western, but overall global civilization on this tiny planet called the earth. What I am questioning in this book are basically values and principles by which we humans, Americans in particular, go by. Unless they are sound, logical, and ethical, we are bound to make more mistakes and mishaps as we move onto the next century, the twenty-second. In fact, we humanity may not even be able to meet the next century, unless we make major drastic changes in the ways that we value certain things, in the principles that we choose to uphold, and in the attitudes and behaviors that we exercise in our relationships with the rest of humanity on this planet. In its style, this book is philosophical in search of truth. It is descriptive as well as prescriptive positing some ways to correct and to improve present conditions of human conventions, for the purpose of upgrading human civilization not only for Americans and Westerners, but more for the rest of the world. Further, this book is for those who have passion for humanity, i.e., who passionately would like to see change to upgrade the quality of human civilization. This book will challenge you, provoke you, or even depress you to some extent, depending upon your values and attitudes. This book requires you to have thought about meaning of life, values, conscience, morality, ethics, and eugenics to fully appreciate it. That is, this book presupposes sufficient prior knowledge on those topics. It does not explain definitions and concepts of major terms for the topics. So, if you have not, then this will be a new frontier for you to embark, although it may be a thought provoking challenge for you. For instance, this book is to convince you to change your view on conventions in order to see what is beyond human conventions. It is practical to follow through the conventions as members of society. But, it is crucial to see the spirit and rational behind the conventions, so that we can change our conventions to be true to the nature, for the purpose of moving it closer towards the supernatural. Most of our conventions are anti-natural or unnatural, which consequently create so many by-products ruining the nature. That is why we are currently dealing with global warming so alarmingly as a global warning. The best human conventions are those that honor the nature reflecting natural courses in order. Further, this book is for you if your have passion for future. It is to touch the conceptual arenas that never have been dealt with before, and the frontier that no man has gone before, This book is for thinkers who would like to ponder and meditate, to wonder and speculate, to check and verify, to dream and innovate, to challenge and to create something new and better for the sake of humanity, especially for the future generations. This book is for leaders, not managers, for dreamers and not for those set in their ways. This book is philosophical in its way of discoursing, because it is the best way to get to the bottom of the truth. It will also help you to follow

Business Ethics. “Morten: And what are we going to do, when you have made liberal-minded and high-minded men of us? Dr. Stockman: Then you shall drive all the wolves out of the country, my boys!” (Ibsen, An Enemy of the People, Act V) The theoretical and empirical research of this book describes how the traditional safeguards of the rights of minority shareholders have failed in their duty and how those shareholders have remained practically without any protection against the arbitrariness of the companies and majority shareholders. The law, the SEC, society, boards of directors, independent directors, auditors, analysts, underwriters and the press have remained in many cases worthless panaceas. Nevertheless, in the Ethics of 2000 new vehicles have been developed for the protection of minority shareholders, mainly the Internet, transparency, activist associations and ethical funds. Those vehicles give the shareholders at least the chance to understand the pattern and methods that are utilized to wrong them and give them a viable alternative for investment in ethical funds. The new vehicles will prevent minority shareholders from using the Armageddon weapon, by ceasing to invest in the stock exchange and causing the collapse of the system, that discriminates against them.
