The German Language In British Higher Education. The discipline of German Studies in English-speaking countries is in crisis and the situation in British Higher Education can be seen as a paradigmatic example. Symptoms of the crisis are a dramatic decrease in the number of students, financial difficulties and the resulting closures of German Departments. Furthermore, the language skills which finally emerge from universities are not always satisfactory. The present book sheds light on key aspects of the institutionalised teaching and learning of German language in the UK. The first part - the macro-context - surveys the socio-political developments that have recently affected the sector of modern languages and specifically the discipline of German Studies. The second part - the micro-context -, zooms in to the teaching and learning as experienced from both students' and teachers' perspective. Ultimately, by linking the macro-analysis with the micro findings, the present book proposes a number of strategies which could contribute to the optimisation and enhancement of teaching and learning German in British Higher Education.

German Through English Eyes. McLelland's pioneering study charts the history of foreign language learning and teaching in the UK over five centuries (1500-2000), taking German as her case study. From the first grammar of German for English speakers, published in 1680, McLelland traces the growth in interest in German for travel and trade, and its rapid increase in prestige in the eighteenth century as a language of literary merit, before German became established in schools and universities from the second quarter of the nineteenth century onwards. Taking hundreds of textbooks as her primary sources, as well as the pronouncements of teachers, examiners and policy-makers, McLelland considers the changing reasons for teaching and learning German, and the consequent changes in teaching methods (including the influence of the Reform Movement around 1900, innovations such as language laboratories, and, more recently, the communicative approach). She analyses changes in how the German language was presented, including advances in how the sound system and word order were described. Finally, and crucially, she considers how German culture and history have been represented to English-speaking learners, particularly over the past hundred years, a century of troubled Anglo-German cultural relations. A chronological bibliography of several hundred textbooks for the period 1600-2000 will serve as a stimulus for further research.

Laughter And War. War is no laughing matter. During a war, however, laughter can play a vital role in sustaining morale, both in the armies at the Front and in their homelands. Among wars, the 1914–18 conflict has left a haunting legacy, and remains a central topic in modern European history. Evolving Agendas In European English Medium Higher Education. English medium-of-instruction (EMI) is transforming modern-day universities across the globe, creating increasingly complex linguistic and intercultural realities which lecturers, students and decision-makers must negotiate. Teaching subject matter at higher-education level through the medium of English, in countries where English is neither an official nor national language (e.g. the Netherlands, Germany), is a highly complex phenomenon fraught with challenges and benefits. EMI programmes are capable of transforming domestic degree programmes into platforms of intercultural teaching and learning by infusing them with greater numbers of international faculty and students.
