The Role Of Theory In Sex Research. Attempting to bridge the epistemological gaps between "positivist" and "postmodern" approaches to theoretical models of sexual behavior, this book brings together essays and discussion by scholars representing a range of viewpoints and contrasting theoretical approaches. The essays examine four areas: sexuality through the life cycle, sexual orientation, individual differences in sexual risk taking, and adolescent sexual behavior.

Sex Differences In Social Behavior. In presenting an innovative theory of sex differences in the social context, this volume applies social-role theory and meta-analytic techniques to research in aggression, social influence, helping, nonverbal, and group behavior. Eagly's findings show that gender stereotypic behavior results from different male and female role expectations, and that the disparity between these gender stereotypes and actual sex differences is not as great as is often believed.

New Directions In Sex Research. This pUblication comprises the proceedings of a conference held at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Stony Brook, New York, June 5 -9, 1974. The conference was jointly sponsored by the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at SUNY, Stony Brook, the Institute for Sex Research at Indiana University, and the Editor of this journal. Financing for the conference came from the National Institute of Mental Health. The initial planning for the conference was a shared effort of Stanley F. Yolles, Paul Gebhard, Richard Green, and Eli A. Rubinstein. In addition to the planning of the conference and the selection of participants, all four served as program coordinators during the conference to help ensure productive use of the limited time available. Grateful acknowledgment is given for the advice and con sultation of Jack Wiener, George Renaud, and Betty Pickett of the NIMH, who provided assistance in the development of the conference plans. The selection of participants was planned to permit a wide sampling of researchers working in areas of significance to the future of sex research. The titles of the papers listed in the table of contents reveal this broad approach. Furthermore, the remaining participants were included as individuals whose re search and scholarly interests would ensure a multidisciplinary approach to the topics under discussion.

Methods Sex And Madness. "Medical and social researchers in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries both reproduced and helped to construct a vision of 'normal' sexuality. This research provides a clear example of the links between everyday life and scientific thinking and those between social research and social power. Taking this as a starting point, the book then looks at the research community and the research process in more detail before moving on to examine the main techniques used in social research: the use of official statistics, the survey method, interviewing, laboratory observation, ethnography, the use of documentary sources and textual analysis. By exploring both technical and conceptual problems in the work of researchers like Freud and Kinsey, and by considering the difficulties faced by researchers concerned with phenomena such as rape, witch hunts and prostitution, this book makes methodological issues both interesting and accessible."--BOOK JACKET.
